Invention

If you are familiar with the outdoor Electronic festival that happens in Montreal called “Igloofest” then you know exactly how much fun it is to party outside all night in your one piece snowsuit. I was skeptical at first but it turned out to be my favorite festival experience to date.

Live Nation & Electronic Nation is going to attempt to bring the ice cold party vibe to Echo Beach this year and they’re calling it Brrrrr! Winter Music Festival. The lineup will be announced on Monday and the festival happens on Feb 1st & 2nd. Check out the website!

Neil Young is on a quest towards true audio integrity and he’s developed a new music service & device to prove it.

He has been talking about problems with modern audio codecs for decades. He was angry at CDs back in the 1990s and most recently he lashed out against MP3s saying that they dummy down and essentially denigrate classic recordings.

“My goal is to try to rescue the art form that I’ve been practicing for the past 50 years. We live in the digital age and, unfortunately, it’s degrading our music, not improving it … It’s not that digital is bad or inferior, it’s that the way it’s being used isn’t doing justice to the art. The MP3 only has 5 percent of the data present in the original recording. … The convenience of the digital age has forced people to choose between quality and convenience, but they shouldn’t have to make that choice.”

From Bob Dylan to Jay-Z,  PONO promises to deliver music the way it was meant to be heard. I’m pretty biased as I think Neil Young is pretty much, the greatest ever but I am genuinely stoked to check out this new service / device when it’s moved beyond prototype phase.

What do you think?

There is a “heavy equipment playground” in Las Vegas where you can drive bulldozers for FUN!

So, if you’ve outgrown the sandbox but not your inner-child, then this is the place for you! “Dig It” is for everyone aged 14 to 114 who’s willing to spend at least 90 minutes scooping up massive piles of dirt and other doing other bulldozer/excavator involving activities.

It’s a 7 step experience:

  1. You choose either a bulldozer or excavator: With a bulldozer, you can build huge mounds and push gigantic tires. With an excavator, you can dig trenches and stack 2000 pound tires. Oh, dilemma, dilemma.
  2. You undergo the breathalyzer and a safety orientation: Always a good thing to do before you get into a massive, dirt-destroying machine.
  3. You undergo an in-cab orientation: An instructor shows you the working of each little button and leaver so that you can move your machine with grace and poise.
  4. You do a warm-up exercise: You move your large mechanical friend around the yard, under the watchful eyes of the crew.
  5. You do some guided activities: And now you get to the real stuff. Guided by the staff, you can play a game of “Excavator Basketball” or build and ride your own “Bulldozer Teeter-Totter.”
  6. FREE TIME! It’s like recess; you have ultimate freedom to do whatever the Dig-It rule book and the state law doesn’t prohibit.
  7. You accept your award. Graciously claim your official Certificate of Completion. This is probably the only place where you get an award for having fun. And there you have it!

So on your next trip to Vegas, instead of blowing all of your life savings or drowning your miseries in alcohol, you can satisfy that little part of you that’s always dreamt of being a construction worker. Dig up more some info from the source!

Writing your name in the snow is old news, apparently.

Boys, you can now play electric guitar solos with your pee. That’s pretty sweet, I guess?

You can also grab you pee track and listen to it via Guitar Pee’s mobile app.

Projection Mapping is a very cool and impressive new way to present in style

Amon Tobin has taken this medium to a whole new level. His live rig is a giant wall of cubes that is completely mapped out. Tobin himself resides in one of these cubes for the duration of his set which you can hardly notice compared to the sensory overload that his show produces.

Check out the video below that includes plenty footage of the projection wall as well as interviews with the team that was behind building, programming, and transporting his live set.

Very impressive stuff.

MaKey MaKey is an invention kit for the 21st century. Turn everyday objects into touchpads and combine them with the internet. It’s a simple Invention Kit for Beginners and Experts doing art, engineering, and everything in between:

Makey Makey is an easy to use kit for converting everyday objects into computer input devices (video). Bananas, Play Doh, people, and other conductive objects can be connected to the Makey Makey board via alligator clips. Once connected, the objects become touch sensitive and can be used to do anything a keyboard or mouse can do. Makey Makey was developed by MIT Media Lab students Jay Silver and Eric Rosenbaum. They are now raising funds on Kickstarter in order to mass produce Makey Makey.
